LITERARY WALK YOUTH WRITING CONTEST

Mystery Writing Contest


In conjunction with the Literary Walk/Erle Stanley Gardner Festival that is honoring the famous mystery writer and Ventura resident, Ventura County Library is hosting a youth writing contest. The contest is open to residents of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties, up to and including age 17.

The opening paragraph must include the phrase "one dark night in Ventura"(or any other city in Ventura or Santa Barbara Counties). Stories must be 12 (twelve) pages OR LESS.

Attention will be given to audience appropriate use of language, style, content and characterization. Submissions will not be judged on artwork. Only one short story submission per student is allowed.

First and Second Place Honors in each of the following categories: Grades 1-2, Grades 3-4, Grades 5-6, Grades 7-8, Grades 9-10, Grades 11-12. The contest starts September 13, 2001 and ends October 10, 2001 at closing of the three Ventura County Libraries.

Winners will be announced during the Literary Walk/Erle Stanley Gardner Festival on November 3, 2001 in downtown Ventura. Winners will win (1) a gift certificate for free pizza from Dominos Pizza, (2) placement as winners on the web site www.literarywalkette.hwy.com , and (3) the right to do a signing of their writing at one future Literary Walk.

By entering, the author and his/her legal guardian gives
www.literarywalkette.1hwy.com one-time permission to publish writing as a "2001 Literary Walk Youth Writing Contest Winner" and/or reference to writing on the web site if they so choose. Thereafter, all rights will be returned to the author/writer.
